Back Pain Relief: Methods For Relieving Back Pain

There are many factors that can cause pain in the back, including injury, sprains of ligaments, spasm, slipped disk or joint problem. The most common cause of pain in the back is using the back muscles for activities that body is not used to, such as working in the yard, or lifting heavy weights. Almost everyone experiences back pain at some point in their lives, and is the second most common neurological disorder.

Back Pain Relief Techniques

If you are suffering from back pain, the first step to address the issue is to consult your primary care provider. There are certain serious conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated disc, osteoporosis, spondylosistheses and tumor that can cause back pain as well.

It has been proved that acupuncture can provide the back pain relief, and people who get acupuncture treatment are less likely to use the medication for pain relief. As per traditional Chinese medicine practice, the pain is caused by the blocked energy along the energy pathways in the body, and acupuncture needles are inserted along the invisible pathways to unblock them.

Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chili peppers, and when the cream containing this ingredient is applied to the skin, it depletes the substance P—a neurochemical that transmits pain, and hence provides the back pain relief. This cream is easily available in health food stores, drug stores and on Internet. Before applying the cream, wear disposable gloves, and do not touch eyes or open skin.

Vitamin D deficiency results from chronic muscle pain, so if you are suffering from it this could be a possible cause. Fortified milk and cereals, fish with small bones and exposure to sunlight are good sources of vitamin D. Studies have shown that music is very therapeutic for several conditions including disability, depression, and anxiety. It has immediate effect on reducing pain and hence provides the back pain relief.
Because the bark of white willow tress have salicin, they have the potential for pain relief. In the body, it is converted to salicylic acid that helps in back pain relief and inflammation.

Some yoga poses and exercises are designed specifically for back pain relief. Yoga creates a balance in the body with the help of different poses, and also helps develop strength and flexibility. Bowen therapy is a gentle bodywork, and makes use of specialized moves by the therapist using their thumbs and fingers. The therapist pulls the skin away from the muscle and applies pressure that assists in quickly getting rid of the tension, leading to back pain relief.

Some other chronic back pain relief techniques include deep breathing practice, massage therapy, chiropractic, Prolotherapy, Alexander technique, and Balneotherapy. However, it is important to consult your doctor before starting any new technique.

Do You Know About This Back Hazard?

Do you exercise?  Do you hit the gym two, three, or even four times a week to stay healthy and in shape?  Do you know that what you think is keeping you healthy could be making you chronically ill?  Are you aware that right there, at the gym, you are in contact with one of the main and most common causes of serious back injuries?

People used to lifting weights know about very good ways to protect their lower back while they are working out; however, even the most experienced gym enthusiasts, the best weightlifters out there, forget or ignore the most common cause of back injury.  It is as much a personal responsibility as it is the trainer’s to know and enforce the correct and healthy way to pick up dumbbells.

Yes, you read right.  The way in which you pick up the dumbbells you use to strengthen your muscles and your core, can either make you healthy or cause you serious injury.  It is how you pick up the dumbbells that makes all the difference.

Go to the gym and just stand for a while paying attention to how people pick the weights up from the floor.  You will see some of the worst postures ever.  Most people pick up the dumbbells by bending over with their backs rounded.  Of course, they will never do that while doing the actual exercise, but they don’t think about it before or after doing the movement.  Just because picking up the weights is not a part of THE exercise routine, they don’t think good posture is necessary when moving dumbbells around the gym.  They forget that good posture is necessary not only while exercising but also during every single movement they engage in throughout the day, be it reaching for some sugar from a shelf, sitting in front of the computer, taking a shower, or lifting weights from the floor.

The care one puts into each movement is what ensures ones’ general wellbeing.  Back pain is a very common problem in today’s society, a society ruled by computers, fast-paced lives, and little attention to healthy habits.  Back pain is, in many cases, ignored and taken as normal until it becomes chronic and unbearable, and it can start with something as simple as lifting a child, a grocery bag, or a pair of 20 pound dumbbells.

You can say that people who exercise regularly truly care about themselves, their health, and general wellness, however quality is in the details.  In order to be really healthy, one has to pay attention to every signal the body sends our way, and more importantly work on prevention.  Regular and carefully done exercise, frequent visits to the chiropractor to align the body, and other stress control practices, will ensure you live a healthy and pain free life.

Take a look at this Ontario chiropractor; her practice is the perfect complement for a healthy life without artificial components.  All the health you need is within you and at your reach if you only decide to be careful and conscious about how you handle yourself, you body, and your posture.

What You Can Do At Home to Relieve Back Pain

Often, back pain can be treated at home, depending on the cause of the pain, and the severity of the pain. You may also run into a situation where some time passes before you are able to seek medical treatment for your back pain. In either event, there are things that you can do at home to help ease or completely relieve the back pain that you are experiencing.

Start by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. Try to use a pain reliever that is also reduces swelling, such as Tylenol or Motrin. Follow the directions, and no matter how badly your back hurts, do not take more than recommended. Also realize that the more pain you are feeling when you take the medication, the longer it takes for the medication to start working.

Most back pain is lower back pain. If the back pain is caused by overuse or strain, any doctor will tell you to rest for two to three days. This means lying on your back, with your knees slightly elevated with the use of pillows. You may also find it more comfortable to place a pillow just under your hips as well. If possible, lie on a hard surface, such as the floor, instead of a soft bed. After a couple of days, start walking for a few minutes at a time every hour or two, so that the muscles don’t become weak, and this will only prolong your back pain.

Heat is highly recommended. You should typically apply heat for twenty to thirty minutes, and then remove it for twenty to thirty minutes before applying heat again. However, if there is swelling involved, you should alternate between heat and ice, apply heat for twenty minutes, and then ice for twenty minutes, followed by heat again. The heat will help the pain, by loosening the muscles, and the ice will help the swelling, which will in turn also help to relieve pain.

If possible, you can try to have someone massage your back. However, if you have injured your back, you should have your massage done by a professional, and not an amateur, as someone who does not have a thorough understanding of your injury, and human anatomy, may do more harm than good.

Finally, if your back pain persists for more than a week, you will need to see your doctor or a Chiropractor for treatment. In either instance, x-rays should be taken to see if there is serious injury that is causing the pain before any type of treatment is administered, including adjustments done by Chiropractors.
